“Miss Hokusai” (Japanese: “百日紅”) is a 2015 Japanese animated drama film Directed by Keiichi Hara. The movie is based on the manga series “Sarusuberi” by Hinako Sugiura, which fictionalizes the life of the real historical figure Katsushika Ōi, the daughter of the famous ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai.
The story is set in Edo (modern-day Tokyo) during the early 19th century and follows the life of Ōi (voiced by Anne Watanabe), a talented artist who assists her father Hokusai (voiced by Yutaka Matsushige) in his artistic endeavors. The film offers a glimpse into the artistic world of ukiyo-e, a traditional style of woodblock printmaking, and explores Ōi’s struggles, aspirations, and her complex relationship with her father.
