As Sir Wilfrid Robarts, an effective but bitter and obstinate barrister, returns to his London office after a heart attack, he is asked to defend Leonard Stephen Vole, the prime suspect in a murder case. Leonard Helm Vole is a World War II veteran who is married to his beloved German wife Christine Helm Vole. He’s unemployed and accused of seducing and killing Emily French, a rich middle-aged single woman, in order to inherit £80,000. Christine’s testimony would be his only alibi, but the court would not consider it because she is his wife. Christine is unexpectedly called to testify in court by the prosecution during the trial as secrets surrounding their lives are revealed.
