“2001” is an evolutionary novel. Sometime in the far past, by putting a monolith on Earth, someone or something nudged evolution (presumably elsewhere throughout the universe as well). Evolution then made it possible for humanity to enter the surface of the moon, where another monolith is located, one that shows the monolith placers that have developed so far for humanity. Now, to enter the monolith placers, a race starts between computers (HAL) and humans (Bowman). The winner will reach, whatever that might be, the next step in evolution.
