When a bank employee, Nader, refuses to leave Tehran, his wife, Simin, sues for divorce in the hope that she will make her young daughter’s life better abroad. Nader hires Razieh, a married woman whose chador covers her pregnancy, wanting someone to look after his senile father while he’s at work. Nader got upset with Razieh, after which he shoves her one day, and she has a miscarriage, which causes Razieh’s husband to take Nader to court.
