When Prince Judah Ben-Hur discovers that Messala, his childhood friend, has been chosen to command the Jerusalem Roman garrison, he is delighted. However, he soon learns that his friend has changed and has become an arrogant conqueror, full of Rome’s greatness. Messala tries to make an example of him and sends him off as a galley slave after Judah refuses to divulge the names of Jews who oppose Roman rule. Judah escapes the galleys by luck and good fortune and manages to return to Jerusalem in hopes of locating his mother and sister, who were imprisoned as well, and of getting vengeance against his one-time friend.
