Baron Geert von Instetten, a veteran of the German imperial hussars, enters office as a coastal district administrator, intending to be promoted to the colonies. Luise, his childhood sweetheart, married nearby estate owner von Briest and is now arranging for their daughter, Effie, to marry the baron rather than her loving cousin Dagobert. Effie claims he meets spirits in his scary home, which was created and stocked with exotica by an ocean captain whose Chinese attendant is rumored to inhabit it. She begins an affair with married Major von Crampas.
