Walt Kowalski is a widower who, amid the shifts in his Michigan neighborhood and the world around him, holds onto his biases. Kowalski is a grumpy, hard-minded, miserable old man who is unable to get along with either his neighbors or his children. He is a veteran of the Korean War whose prize possession is a Gran Torino from 1972 that he holds in mint condition. When his friend, Thao Lor, a young Hmong teenager, attempts to rob his Gran Torino under pressure from his gang member’s cousin, Kowalski sets out to reform the youth. Driven into the life of Thao’s family against his will, Kowalski soon takes action to protect them from the gangs that infest their neighborhood.
