Setsuko and Seita are brother and sister living in war-torn Japan. They find a temporary home with relatives after their mother is killed in an air raid. After a fall out with their aunt, they flee the city and take up residence in an abandoned shelter. While the fate of their soldier father is unknown, the two must rely on one another to keep a roof over their heads and food in their bellies. They eventually succumb to hunger as supplies become scarce, and the only source of entertainment is the light of the fireflies.
