Kanji Watanabe is a long-time city office bureaucrat who spends his whole working life doing nothing, along with the rest of the office. He discovers that he is dying of cancer, and in his life, he needs to find some purpose. He finds himself unable to speak to his family, and he spends a night with a novelist in the city, but that leaves him unsatisfied. Next, he spends time in his office with a young woman, but ultimately decides he can make a difference in his work… Co-workers at his funeral address his actions over the past few months after Watanabe’s death and question why he suddenly became assertive in his job of supporting a city park and deciding to be more like Watanabe.
