Someone is assassinating jailed mafia boss Mickey Cohen’s gang in 1950s Los Angeles. Captain Dudley leads the police in persuading wiseguys from Jersey, Cleveland, and elsewhere to return home. Pierce Patchett, a wealthy developer, has a stable of high-class hookers who pose as movie stars. Three plainclothes cops are caught off guard by the plot to replace Cohen: White saw his father suffocate his mother and then disappear, so he punishes offenders with swift retribution. Exley’s father was a hero cop who was mysteriously murdered, and he wants revenge according to the law; Vicennes, a clothes horse, consults for a Dragnet-style television program. Would they be able to avoid corruption and murder, and will they discover their own sense of morality?
