A middle-aged retired Navy officer Larry is fired from his job after corporate downsizing. The reason they cite is his lack of a college degree. To get a degree, he enrolls himself in a college and finds himself in the company of misfits who had come to the college to make a better future. There he meets Mercedes Tainot who is unhappily married to an ex-college professor. Soon after they meet romance sparks in them but their personal lives problems are yet to be solved.
The movie is directed by Tom Hanks and features Tom Hanks himself along with Julia Roberts, Bryan Cranston, Cedric the Entertainer, Taraji P. Henson, Gugu Mbatha- Raw, Wilmer Valderrama, and Pam Grier.
