As a lineup of musicians awaits the famed “Mother of the Blues,” Ma Rainey tensions and passions escalate during an afternoon recording session in 1920s Chicago. The fearless, feisty Ma arrives late to the studio and immediately engages in a battle of wills with her white manager and producer over control of her song. While the band waits in the claustrophobic rehearsal room of the studio, ambitious trumpeter Levee who has a thing for Ma’s girlfriend and is determined to make his own mark in the music industry – inspires his fellow musicians to tell stories that reveal truths that will forever alter their lives. MA RAINEY’S BLACK BOTTOM, adapted from two-time Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilson’s play, honors the blues’ transformational power and the musicians who refuse to be defined by society’s preconceptions.
