1916 – On the battlefields of France, trench warfare between French and German forces perpetuates the slaughter of soldiers thus impeding the substantial progress of either side. The French military, oblivious to the plight of the men bogged down in the hell of the trenches, persuaded their upper ranks to break the impasse with the prospect of promotions – regardless of the result. Subsequently, Colonel Dax is ordered by General Paul Mireau to launch an impossible assault on Anthill’s heavily fortified, main German position, and Dax is unable to resist the suicidal task. A few of Dax’s soldiers are scapegoated in exchange for their service and he is forced to mount a defense against his own egomaniacal superiors and their insatiable hunger for glory.
