Marion Crane, a Phoenix office worker, is fed up with how life has handled her. She has to visit her lover Sam during lunch breaks, and they can’t marry because Sam has to pay alimony for the majority of his earnings. Marion is entrusted by her boss to bank forty thousand dollars on Friday. Marion leaves town and goes to Sam’s California shop, seeing a chance to take the money to start a new life. She gets off the main highway and pulls into the Bates Motel, tired from the long drive and caught in a storm. Norman, the motel’s manager, is a quiet young man who seems to be dominated by his mother.
