David Kim looks at old photos and videos in San Jose, California, of his daughter, Margot, and his late wife, Pamela, who died almost two years earlier from lymphoma, after which David and Margot became distant. Margot goes to a friend’s house for her study group one night. David is unable to meet Margot the next morning but believes she has gotten up early to go to school. He calls Margot’s piano teacher later but is told that six months ago, Margot had canceled her lessons. Before abruptly moving $2,500 to a deleted Venmo account, David finds that Margot had been pocketing the money for the lessons. David calls the police, discovering that Margot is missing, and the case is assigned to Detective Rosemary Vick, who asks for information on the personality and friendships of Margot. David manages to access Margot’s Facebook and only talks to her contacts to discover that since the death of Pamela, Margot has not had close friends.
