The aging silent movie queen Norma Desmond refuses to believe that her time in the limelight has ended in this dark film-noir tale-she lives as a recluse with the deranged conviction that her stardom is as high as ever. She hires him to write a screenplay starring her in an attempt to set up her comeback in film after meeting Joe Gillis, a young, hack screenwriter. The screenwriter claims that he can control her, but soon discovers that such a mission is difficult. In addition, his ambivalence about their relationship, combined with the demented inability of Norma to let go, leads to some detrimental repercussions for the two involved parties.
