Sweet Smell of Success is a movie that exposes the underside of New York City’s glamorous dark life. It displays brutality, impulsiveness, greed, wrong, cerebral violence, loose American ambition, treason, and cynicism. Sweet Smell of Success turns the capricious Broadway of Damon Runyon on its head, searching out at it from the mindset of Runyon’s close friend. Presumably, Billy Wilder’s Ace in the Hole has introduced such an atrabilious view of unethical intelligencers at work.
