Travis Bickle, a taxi driver from New York City, continually, almost obsessively, reflects on the ugly corruption of life around him, becoming deeply troubled by his own isolation and alienation. He remains a total outsider in almost every aspect of his life, unable to make emotional contact with anyone. He haunts the nearby pornography emporiums to find diversion, unable to sleep night after night, and starts desperately dreaming of an escape from his depressing life.
