On the Western and Atlantic Railroad, Johnnie Gray is an engineer on his train, The General. He does his utmost to sign up with the Confederate army when war is declared between the North and South, but he is rejected because he is in a specified occupation. His sweetheart, Annabelle, and her family have no trust in him, and she is embarrassed, believing that he is shirking his responsibility. The Union army, meanwhile, has the scheme to steal the general and they grab it and head north when it ends in Big Shanty. Annabelle Lee is a train passenger and Johnnie goes to rescue his train and his girl behind enemy lines.
