The Mastermind directed by Kelly Reichardt is a tense and atmospheric crime drama that explores the unraveling of a surprisingly casual yet audacious heist. Set in 1970 the story follows James Blaine Mooney a failed architect seeking a different kind of legacy. Along with his cohorts, Mooney brazenly wanders into a museum in broad daylight and manages to pull off the theft of four valuable paintings. However the crew soon realize that executing the robbery was the easy part. As the reality of possessing high profile stolen art sets in moving and holding onto the masterpiece proves far more complicated and dangerous than they ever anticipated. The escalating pressure and closing walls force Mooney to abandon his former life plunging him into a paranoid and desperate existence on the run as he struggles to survive the treacherous consequences of his master plan.
