A biochemist and his scheming wife arrive in Berlin for a symposium where a scientist and his shady Arab backer will present groundbreaking discovery. While his wife checks into the hotel, he takes a cab back to the airport to retrieve his briefcase, which was left at the curb. On the way, he is involved in an auto accident and falls into a coma, from which he awakens four days later without identification and with memory gaps. He arrives at the hotel to find that his wife has forgotten who he is and that another man has claimed his identity. He tries to figure out what’s going on with the help of a nurse, a cab driver, a retired Stasi spy, and an academic buddy. Is the solution hidden in the briefcase?
