The daughter of the mayor of a small mountain town is Mitsuha. She is a simple high school girl who lives with her sister and grandmother and has no worries about letting it be understood that she is uninterested in Shinto rituals or supporting the electoral campaign of her father. She dreams of leaving a dull city and trying her luck in Tokyo instead. Taki is a Tokyo high school boy who works at an Italian restaurant part-time and aspires to become an architect or an artist.
