“Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai” is a 2011 Japanese period drama film Directed by Takashi Miike. The movie is a remake of the 1962 film “Harakiri” directed by Masaki Kobayashi.
The story is set in the early 17th century during the Edo period in Japan, a time marked by social upheaval and samurai honor codes. The film follows the character of Hanshiro Tsugumo (played by Ebizo Ichikawa), a ronin (masterless samurai) who arrives at the Iyi clan’s compound and requests to perform hara-kiri, a ritual suicide, in their courtyard.
However, Tsugumo’s request is not what it seems. As he recounts a tragic tale of another ronin who came to the clan with a similar request, the film delves into the complexities of honor, loyalty, and the brutal realities of samurai society. The Iyi clan’s cruelty and manipulation are exposed as Tsugumo’s story unfolds, revealing a powerful critique of the moral decay within the samurai class.
