“Smugglers,” directed by Seung-wan Ryu, is set in the 1970s in Guncheon, a small village near the sea. It revolves around the lives of Haenyeos, women divers adept at diving without equipment, particularly focusing on two best friends, Chun-ja and Jin-sook, along with Jin-sook’s brother and Jangdori. These Haenyeos had a tradition of collecting seafood underwater for their livelihood. However, as factories began to encroach on the beach, their traditional way of life was threatened. In desperation, the ship crews join the smuggling business in the water, hoping to secure their survival. Unfortunately, the smuggling business in their village grows out of control, putting Jin-sook’s family and the once peaceful village in jeopardy.
