“The King and the Clown” (Korean: 왕의 남자) is a 2005 South Korean historical drama film directed by Lee Joon-ik. The movie is based on the play “Yeokdosan” by Kim Tae-woong.
The story is set during the Joseon Dynasty and follows two street performers, Jang-saeng (played by Kam Woo-sung) and Gong-gil (played by Lee Joon-gi), who entertain crowds with their comedic performances. They are eventually arrested for their bawdy humor and brought to the royal court. There, they become entangled in a complex web of intrigue and power dynamics, caught between the tyrannical King Yeonsan (played by Jung Jin-young) and the royal court’s officials.
