Chris Taylor is a young, naive American who, in Vietnam, gives up college and volunteers to fight. He soon learns that his presence is very unessential upon arrival, and is considered irrelevant to the other soldiers, since he has not fought for as long as the rest of them and has felt the effects of war. Chris has two non-commissioned officers, Staff Sergeant Robert Barnes, who is ill-tempered and indestructible, and Sergeant Elias Grodin, who is more polite and cooperative. When an unlawful killing happens during a village raid, a line is drawn between the two NCOs and other men in the platoon. Chris himself draws on the internal meltdown as the war continues. And when he’s fighting for life. And he soon learns as he fights for survival that he is fighting two wars, the conflict with the enemy and the conflict within his platoon between the guys.
