Beth Emhoff returns from a business trip to Hong Kong with a layover in Chicago, where she has sex with her ex-boyfriend. Beth is sick, but she believes it is due to jet lag. She returns to Minneapolis and infects her son Clark and husband Mitch with the virus. Mitch is quarantined when Beth and Clark die, and the physicians discover he is immune to the unknown infection. Meanwhile, cases of the mysterious ailment have been reported in Hong Kong, London, and a minor province, as the American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization work to understand the virus. As the virus spreads in a geometric progression, a race against the clock begins, and if no remedy is found – quickly – humankind will perish.
