At the beginning of the 15th century, the narrative film, divided into eight short stories, depicts the time of chaos in Russia – from 1400 to 1423, as if seen through the eyes of the icon-monk Andrey Rublev. There is no connection between the separate short stories, but they paint a general image of medieval Russia, taking shape like a mosaic. The first small chapter illustrates a monk’s ride in a balloon. The film’s main plot is the departure of three monks from the monastery of Andronikov: Daniil, Cyril and Andrey Rublev.
