Ricci, an unemployed man in Italy’s troubled post-World War II economy, finally finds a decent career – hanging up posters – for which he needs a bicycle. His bicycle, however, is soon stolen. He and his son are searching the streets of Rome for the bicycle. Ricci eventually locates the thief, but he is forced to abandon his investigation due to a lack of evidence. But he and his son are well aware that Ricci would be unable to keep his work without a bicycle.
