Maximus is a strong Roman general, loved by Marcus Aurelius, the citizens and the ageing Emperor. The Emperor selects Maximus over his own son, to be his successor . Commodus, before his death, and a power struggle leaves Maximus and his family sentenced to death. The strong general is unable to save his family, and before he dies, his lack of will causes him to be captured and put into the Gladiator games. The only ambition that now fuels him is the potential to climb to the top so that he can look into the eyes of the man who is going to feel his vengeance.
