A shy 16-year-old, fed up with her high school’s sexist and toxic status quo, draws inspiration from her mother’s revolutionary history and secretly publishes a zine that sparks a school-wide coming-of-age movement. This is a contentious film. Even if the images of angst-ridden young women coming to their own understanding of feminism are immature and “out of line,” there will be a community of people who enjoy it. Others would argue that the show does not depict “true” feminism or the “correct” way to be a feminist. There will also be those who believe that women are depicted as victims and all men are villains.
