A man from his preceding has viewed him pumping gas, and now his ancient subsistence reaches out and pulls him back. The quiet subsistence of small-metropolis gas station possessor Jeff Bailey (Robert Robert Mitchum) is interposed when a guardian from his shady yesteryear, small-time unlawful Joe Stephanos (Paul Paul Valentine), acknowledges him. Stephanos’ leader, crooked wagerer Whit Sterling (Kirk Kirk Douglas), had employed Jeff to song down Kathie Moffat (Jane Jane Greer), a lady intimate who shot Whit. Jeff and Kathie fell in love; she left him to go returned to Sterling, who now wants Jeff to settle unnumbered objective scores
