Antoine Doinel, a fourteen-year-old at-risk boy, feels like a stranger in his own home because his inattentive, moody, and emotionally inaccessible parents—the unmotherly Gilberte and the distant stepfather, Julien—are always absent from their cramped Parisian apartment. Antoine, who is misunderstood, depressed, and unable to tell his parents the truth, can’t wait to grow up and find a way to break free from the tyranny of his home and school. As a result, his childish innocence causes him to commit minor crimes in order to fund his plans for independence; however, Antoine is soon apprehended and placed in an observation center with other troubled teenagers, where he will remain until others determine his fate. Antoine, on the other hand, begs for affection despite knowing he’s on his own, and his only wish is to see the ocean for the first time.
