The oil tankers SS Pendleton and SS Fort Mercer send a distress signal to the US Coast Guard station in Chatham, Massachusetts, in 1952. In a small rescue boat, Commander Daniel Cluff assigns the crew of Bernie Webber, Richard Livesey, Andy Fitzgerald, and Ervin Maske to rescue the crew of the SS Pendleton.Cluff is alerted by Bernie and his girlfriend Miriam about the severity of the storm, but he obeys the order. Meanwhile, the SS Pendleton has split and lost her forward section, and the survivors are led by his professional and accomplished engineer Ray Sybert. He uses his skills to manoeuvre the stern into a more secure position, anchoring it to an unstable sandbank to prevent sinking.
