Freddie Quell (Joaquin Phoenix) is a worried, boozy wanderer floundering with the trauma of World War II and whatever inner demons ruled his life earlier than that. On a cataclysmal night in 1950, Freddie boards a passing boat and meets Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman), the attractive leader of a spiritual stir known as the Beget. Freddie tries challenging to cleave to Dodd’s crazy training and types a shut bond with his tutor, indeed as other actors of Dodd’s internal circle see him as trouble. The film is unclear about Dodd’s former history and by no means mentions the wisdom fabrication that Hubbard started out jotting. When we meet Dodd, he’s middle-aged, jocund, no longer above singing gleeful melodies and appearing the cut-up at parties.
