Swedish knight Antonius Block and his squire Jöns return home from the Crusades and find the land devastated by the plague. Block notices that people are living in terror everywhere, thinking it is the retribution of God and that the end has come. Block has lost his confidence and is searching for answers, so the knight challenges him to a game of chess when Death comes to him. The world is grim and many are searching for answers, but no answers seem to be found. Block makes it to his home and feels that he’s got the upper hand, but Death’s going to have his way.
