“Densha Otoko,” also known as “Train Man,” is a 2005 Japanese romantic comedy film Directed by Shosuke Murakami. The movie is based on a true story and inspired by a popular internet forum thread that gained immense popularity in Japan.
The story revolves around a young man known only as “Densha Otoko” (played by Takayuki Yamada), which translates to “Train Man.” Densha Otoko is a socially awkward and introverted otaku, a term used in Japan to refer to people with obsessive interests, particularly in anime, manga, and video games.
One day, while riding a train, Densha Otoko musters up the courage to defend a young woman, Aoi Yamada (played by Miki Nakatani), from a drunken man who is harassing her. As a thank-you gesture, Aoi gives Densha Otoko a set of expensive Hermès teacups. Grateful and overwhelmed by her kindness, Densha Otoko seeks advice from an online forum on how to properly express his gratitude to her.
