“Detroit Metal City” is a 2008 Japanese comedy film Directed by Toshio Lee, based on the manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Kiminori Wakasugi.
The story follows Soichi Negishi (played by Ken’ichi Matsuyama), a mild-mannered and aspiring musician with dreams of becoming a pop singer. Negishi moves to Tokyo to pursue his musical career, but ends up joining a death metal band called Detroit Metal City (DMC) due to a series of comical and unfortunate circumstances.
As a member of DMC, Negishi adopts the alter ego of Johannes Krauser II, a vulgar, demonic, and outrageous persona that is completely at odds with his true nature. Krauser’s stage presence and lyrics are shockingly offensive and obscene, which contrasts starkly with Negishi’s sensitive and polite demeanor.
