“20th Century Boys” is a 2008 Japanese science fiction film Directed by Yukihiko Tsutsumi. The movie is the first installment of a film trilogy adapted from the manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Naoki Urasawa.
The story is centered around Kenji Endo (played by Toshiaki Karasawa), a man who owns a convenience store and is leading a seemingly ordinary life. However, he becomes embroiled in a series of events when a mysterious cult leader named Friend emerges and begins enacting a series of apocalyptic events that echo a book of prophecies written by Kenji and his childhood friends during their youth in the 1960s and 1970s. The film alternates between the present day and flashbacks to the characters’ childhood, as it explores the impact of their actions and decisions on the unfolding events. The group of friends had created a secret base and imagined themselves as heroes fighting against a dystopian future, unaware that their fantasies would eventually become intertwined with reality.
