“Shoplifters” (Japanese: “万引き家族” – Manbiki Kazoku) is a 2018 Japanese drama film Directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda. The movie delves into themes of family, poverty, and the bonds that form between individuals who come together to create their own unconventional family unit.
The story revolves around the Shibata family, who live in a small, cramped house in Tokyo. The family members survive by engaging in shoplifting and other petty crimes. Osamu (played by Lily Franky) and his wife Nobuyo (played by Sakura Ando) take in a young girl named Yuri (played by Miyu Sasaki) whom they find outside in the cold. Despite their unconventional lifestyle, the Shibata family’s interactions reveal a deep sense of care and affection for one another.
