“The Face Reader” (Korean: “관상”) is a 2013 South Korean historical drama film directed by Han Jae-rim. The movie is known for its exploration of physiognomy, or the art of reading faces, in the context of a historical and political setting.
The story is set in the Joseon Dynasty and follows Nae-gyeong (played by Song Kang-ho), a skilled face reader who can determine a person’s personality and fate by studying their facial features. He becomes entangled in political intrigues when he is hired to read the faces of the royal family and court officials. As he navigates the dangerous world of court politics, Nae-gyeong must use his abilities to uncover hidden truths and navigate treacherous alliances.
