Walter Neff is one of the best salesmen for the Pacific All Risk Insurance Company. He returns late one evening to his office, bleeding from a gunshot wound, and dictates a memo to colleague Barton Keyes. It all began in May of last year when he went to a client’s house for a regular renewal inquiry and instead met the client’s wife, Phyllis Dietrichson. She inquired about secretly purchasing accident insurance for her husband, and Neff deduced that she wanted to murder him. Neff and Phyllis became lovers quickly, with Neff in charge of the murders. Their scheme went off without a hitch at first, but Neff soon realized he’d been duped and decided to take action.
