In the 60’s in Jackson, Mississippi, aspirant writer Skeeter Phelan had just graduated and returned home after finding a job writing in a futile local newspaper column. When she gets home, she discovers that Constantine Jefferson, her nanny and family maid, is gone. Skeeter sees the possibility of writing a book about the black maids’ relationship with the culture of the South. She first persuades Aibileen Clark to open her heart to her; then Minny Jackson is wrongly fired by the greedy Hilly Holbrook, a leader of the racist high society, and after finding a job with the outcast Celia Foote, Minny agrees to share her tales. Eleven other maids soon agree to be interviewed by Skeeter, who reveals the truth about Constantine as well. When the novel “The Help” is published, the high society of Jackson will never be the same.
