Tolkien is a 2019 American biographical drama film written by David Gleeson and Stephen Beresford and directed by Dome Karukoski. It’s about J. R. R. Tolkien, an English professor who wrote The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, as well as other prominent scholarly works. Nicholas Hoult, Lily Collins, Colm Meaney, and Derek Jacobi star in the film. Tolkien explores the orphaned author’s formative years at school, where he seeks friendship, affection, and creative inspiration among a group of fellow outcasts. As a result, he finds himself at the start of World War I, which threatens to tear the “fellowship” apart. Tolkien’s popular Middle-Earth novels were inspired by many of these encounters.
