Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd, a veteran of three wars, now travels from city to city as a non-fiction storyteller five years after the end of the Civil War, sharing the news of presidents and queens, glorious feuds, catastrophic disasters, and gripping adventures from the far reaches of the globe. He crosses paths on the plains of Texas with Johanna, a 10-year-old who had been taken in by the people of Kiowa six years earlier and raised as one of their own. Hostile to a world she’s never seen, Johanna is being returned against her will to her biological aunt and uncle. Kidd accepts that the infant will be delivered where the law says she belongs. The two will face immense obstacles of both human and natural powers as they look for a place that can either call home, as they journey hundreds of miles into the unforgiving wilderness.
