Robert Angier, his beloved wife, Julia McCullough, and Alfred Borden were friends and assistants of a magician in London at the end of the nineteenth century. When during a performance, Julia accidentally dies, Robert blames Alfred for her death, and they become enemies. Both become popular and competing wizards, sabotaging the other’s success on the stage. Robert becomes obsessed when Alfred performs a good trick, attempting to expose his rival’s secret with disastrous consequences.
