“Failan” is a 2001 South Korean melodrama film Directed by Song Hae-sung. The movie is based on the Japanese novel “Love Letter” by Jiro Asada.
The story revolves around the unlikely and heartfelt connection between a young Chinese woman, Failan (played by Cecilia Cheung), and an older Korean man, Kang-jae (played by Choi Min-sik).
Failan is an immigrant from China who arrives in South Korea to marry a Korean man she has never met. However, when she arrives, she learns that her intended husband has passed away. With no family or connections in the country, Failan faces the prospect of deportation back to China. Kang-jae is a small-time gangster who is facing financial troubles. As a last resort to solve his problems, he agrees to marry Failan in a “paper marriage” to claim her late husband’s life insurance money.
Although they are strangers and do not speak each other’s language, their lives become intertwined when they begin to learn about each other through letters. As Kang-jae reads Failan’s letters to him, he starts to empathize with her and develops a deep sense of care and responsibility for her.
