“Joint Security Area” is a 2000 South Korean mystery-drama film Directed by Park Chan-wook. The movie is based on the novel “DMZ” by Park Sang-yeon.
The story is set in the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), a heavily fortified area that separates North and South Korea. In this tense and politically charged environment, a mysterious shooting incident occurs at the Joint Security Area (JSA), a neutral area where soldiers from both sides of the Korean border meet for negotiations. The film focuses on a Swiss-Korean military investigator, Major Sophie E. Jean (played by Lee Young-ae), who is assigned to uncover the truth behind the shooting. Through a series of interviews with the soldiers involved, the movie gradually reveals the events leading up to the incident.
As Major Jean delves deeper into the testimonies, she uncovers a web of friendship, loyalty, and betrayal that transcends the boundaries of the divided nations. The story unfolds through the perspectives of the North Korean soldier, Sergeant Oh Kyeong-pil (played by Song Kang-ho), and the South Korean soldier, Private Nam Sung-shik (played by Lee Byung-hun), who were at the center of the incident.
